The genus name is derived from the Greek word sfucon and refers to the fruits of this genus. The genus ficus L. has more than 1000 species originating from the tropics and supropia.
Species of this genus grow as trees, shrubs, and reptiles. The leaves are leathery, shiny and covered with fine hairs. All parts of the plant secrete milky juice. To this genus belong some species that are bred as economically important, such as figs – Ficus carica L. and rubber tree.
